Yesterday we were told that today's APOD would be "California Red" - well, it was not too hard to guess that the picture would be one of the California Nebula. However, it isn't very red!

However, this California Nebula image is not very red, and certainly not as red as it could have been.

Let's look at another narrowband image of the California Nebula to understand what we are seeing:

To make this a little different to the usual red images of this target, I used narrowband filters and processed this in the SHO Hubble palette resulting in a colourful rainbow-like image. The OIII signal was however very faint, so I captured extra data with this, 19 hours in all, resulting in 48 hours total integration time.

The rather strange-looking patch of blue in the California Nebula in the APOD is almost certainly OIII. However, the OIII signal from the California Nebula is very faint, so this nebula is not a suitable OIII narrowband object. It's better to capture this nebula in RGB, perhaps enhanced with some Hα.
